Canto Blockchain Faces 33-Hour Outage, Fix Scheduled

Canto plans an upgrade to resolve a consensus issue that has halted the blockchain for over a day.

The Canto blockchain, a Cosmos-based layer-1 designed for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, has been dealing with a 33-hour outage caused by a consensus issue. This disruption has temporarily halted transactions on the blockchain, with the last recorded transaction occurring at 2:29 am on August 11.

Canto’s development team is actively addressing the issue and has scheduled an upgrade for August 12 at 12:00 pm UTC. This upgrade is expected to resolve the consensus problem and restore normal operations. Despite the disruption, Canto reassures users that all funds are safe and that regular activities will resume once the upgrade is completed.

The outage follows the Callisto upgrade, which was locked in on August 9, raising questions about a possible link between the upgrade and the current issue. However, Canto has not provided details on whether the Callisto upgrade contributed to the outage.

Canto launched in August 2022 and has positioned itself as a permissionless general-purpose blockchain with compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Despite its strong start, Canto's recent performance has seen a decline, with the blockchain slipping down the rankings to become the 80th largest by total value locked, according to DefiLlama data.

In September 2023, Canto announced plans to migrate to the Ethereum Network as a layer-2 network but later reversed that decision in March 2024, opting to remain a layer-1 blockchain. As the team works to resolve the current outage, the future of Canto's position in the DeFi ecosystem remains a key point of interest.
